Pachypodium rosulatum is a plant type from the genus Pachypodium in the family of Hundsgiftgewächse (Apocynaceae).

description

Pachypodium rosulatum is a perennial plant whose trunk initially grows in the shape of a bottle, but later becomes a massive caudex with a diameter of 1 m or more. Many thick, tapering, ascending branches with a length of usually 1 to 1.5 m arise from it, rarely reaching 3.5 m. The older parts of the plant are not reinforced, only on the young shoots there are pairs of conical thorns with a length of 2 to 16 mm. The leaves are usually tomentose, they are elliptical in shape, 3 to 8.5 cm long and 0.8 to 3.5 cm wide.

The flowers are in groups of two to twelve on 7 to 60 cm long pedicels , mostly they are colored yellow, but rarely white. The fruits are 6 to 20 cm long, they contain elongated seeds with a length of 6 mm.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

distribution

The species is endemic to Madagascar .

Systematics

The species was first described in 1882 by John Gilbert Baker .

Synonyms are Pachypodium cactipes K.Schum. , Pachypodium drakei Costantin & Bois and Pachypodium rosulatum var. Drakei (Costantin & Bois) Markgr. .

The internal systematics of the species is interpreted differently. GD Rowley (2002) distinguishes four varieties and one form:

  • Pachypodium rosulatum f. bicolor (Lavranos & Rapanarivo) GDRowley
  • Pachypodium rosulatum var. Eburneum (Lavranos & Rapanarivo) GDRowley
  • Pachypodium rosulatum var. Gracilius H.Perrier
  • Pachypodium rosulatum var. Inopinatum (Lavranos) GDRowley
  • Pachypodium rosulatum var. Rosulatum

Jonas Lüthy and John Lavranos, on the other hand, differentiate in the first description of Pachypodium rosulatum subsp. bemarahense (2005) together with this new subspecies a total of six subspecies:

  • Pachypodium rosulatum subsp. rosulatum
  • Pachypodium rosulatum subsp. bemarahense Lüthy & Lavranos
  • Pachypodium rosulatum subsp. bicolor (Lavranos & Rapanarivo) Lüthy
  • Pachypodium rosulatum subsp. cactipes (K.Schum.) Lüthy
  • Pachypodium rosulatum subsp. gracilius (H.Perrier) Lüthy
  • Pachypodium rosulatum subsp. makayense (Lavranos) Lüthy

In nature the species forms hybrids with Pachypodium brevicaule ( Pachypodium × rauhii ), in culture a hybrid with Pachypodium densiflorum ( Pachypodium × hojnyi ) was bred.
