Pachypodium baronii is a plant type from the genus Pachypodium in the family of Hundsgiftgewächse (Apocynaceae).
description
Pachypodium baronii is a perennial plant . Their broad, bottle-shaped trunk is 0.5 to 2 m high and has gray-green, strong, emerging branches. The paired spines are broadly conical and 6 to 8 mm long. The leaves are elliptical to lanceolate in shape. They become 5 to 15 cm long, 4.5 to 6 cm wide and are hairy on the underside. The petioles are short.
The striking flowers are bright red in color and have a white eye in the center. They are narrowly tubular in shape, measure about 5 cm in diameter and 5.5 cm long.
The small fruits are about 5 cm long and 6 to 8 mm in diameter. They contain pink-brown seeds with a diameter of 6 to 7 mm.
Occurrence
The species is endemic to the north of Madagascar .
Systematics
The species was first described in 1907 by Julien Noël Costantin and Désiré Georges Jean Marie Bois .
Two varieties can be distinguished within the species:
- Pachypodium baronii var. Baronii
- Pachypodium baronii var. Windsorii (Poiss.) Pichon : It is also regarded by some authors as a separate species: Pachypodium windsorii Poiss.
