Unwanted foreign organizations in Russia

Foreign and international non-governmental organizations in Russia can be declared as undesirable foreign organizations . As of August 2016, seven US organizations had been registered with the Russian Justice Department .

On May 23, 2015, the State Duma of the Russian Federation passed a law on foreign non-governmental organizations that can be declared undesirable. According to this, they are forbidden from any political activity in Russia, Russian organizations are not allowed to have any relations with them or accept any financial support. Contacts are also put under threat of punishment.

On May 25, a member of the LDPR presented an initial list of foreign organizations that should be declared undesirable. These included the Russian organizations of Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, as well as the Russian human rights organization Memorial International .

On July 7th, the Prosecutor General's Office issued a list of 12 foreign organizations that had requested registration as an "undesirable organization". These were seven American organizations such as the Open Society Foundation of George Soros and the National Endowment for Democracy think tank , as well as two Polish and three Ukrainian non-governmental organizations, one of them active in Crimea .
