task

The UPF protects the national borders of the state of East Timor. The Unidade da Polícia Marítima (UPM) does this on the water .

The UPF conducts patrols along the national borders, mostly in cooperation with the East Timorese Defense Forces (F-FDTL), customs and immigration authorities. It checks for illegal immigration, drug trafficking, smuggling and other illegal activities. The UPF also ensures security at airports along the runways and in the terminal.

Due to the treaties with Indonesia , the only neighboring state to East Timor with a land border, there are no F-FDTL units in Oe-Cusse Ambeno , the East Timorese exclave in West Timor . Your tasks will be taken over by the UPF.

The UPF was created with Act 9/2009, Article 33, of February 18 on the organs of the PNT. At that time, police responsibility in the country was largely still in the hands of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT). It was not until September 28, 2010 that responsibility for police border protection was completely transferred to the national police forces.

On October 12, 2009, a handful of Indonesian soldiers and paramilitaries penetrated the disputed Área Cruz between Indonesia and East Timor . According to the East Timorese press, they attacked a group of East Timorese who were setting up a UPF station at Bisae Súnan. The Indonesians confiscated the building material and took it across the border. They later said they thought it had been abandoned. Two days later, around 100 East Timorese began to carry stones from the nearby river up the mountain to build the station. The situation escalated when soldiers on the other side waved the Indonesian flag . UN officials and East Timorese police were able to calm the situation down until the villagers dispersed.

On April 21, 2005, there was an exchange of fire between Indonesian soldiers and East Timorese policemen of the UPF at the Tactical Coordination Line ( German  tactical coordination line ) between the two countries, near Maliana .
