The East Timorese Citrana is the main place of the administrative office Nitibe (Special Administrative Region Oe-Cusse Ambeno ) and an Aldeia in Suco Beneufe .

geography

The coastal town is located at 71  m above sea level , on the Sawu Sea , near the mouth of the Noel Besi , which forms the border with the Indonesian West Timor for a long distance . To the north is the small island of Fatu Sinai . A road with a length of 47.5 kilometers connects Citrana with the municipal capital Pante Macassar . There is a primary school ( Escola Primaria Citrana ), a community health center and a helipad for emergencies.

Border disputes with Indonesia

On the 1899 map, according to which Portugal and the Netherlands agreed to draw the border, Naktuka was part of Portugal. This is what East Timor’s claim to the area is based on.

The border with Indonesia west of Citrana is controversial. This concerns the area of Naktuka , an area of 1009 hectares on Noel Besi. 21 East Timorese families have settled in this area, while residents of the Indonesian village of Oepoli ( Kupang Governorate ) claim the land as their property. The demarcation is also problematic because the border river constantly changes its course in the rainy season. In principle, Indonesia is based on the borderline along the deepest point of the river, while East Timor is based on the demarcation of the local, traditional Kingdom of Ambeno .

history

At the end of the 19th century Citrana was an export port of the Topasse family of the Costas , who provided the Liurai ( Usif ) from Oecussi . In addition to sandalwood , rattan , beeswax and other goods were shipped to Macau and other destinations here.

Citrana is one of the few places that was spared the destruction caused by the 1999 riots in Oe-Cusse Ambeno.
