Before the 2015 regional reform, Beneufe had an area of 120.69 km². Now there are 119.87 km². The Suco forms the extreme west of the exclave and thus the westernmost point of the entire country. To the north lies the Sawusee , in the northeast the Suco Usitaco , otherwise Beneufe borders on Indonesia . This state border is formed almost entirely by the Noel Besi ( Besi ) river , which rises as Kusi in the Passabe administrative office . Until 2019, the national affiliation of the 1069 hectare Citrana triangle with the place Naktuka ( German  separated head ) was disputed, an area near Citrana , the main town of the administrative office. East Timor had previously waived its claims to the uninhabited island of Fatu Sinai off the coast . In the center of Sucos is the Manoleu , the summit of which reaches a height of 1171  m .

Citrana is located on the coast in the far west of the Sucos. To the east of it, between Cape Ponta Bato Líssan and the mouth of the Oelete River, lies the coastal town of Baocnana ( Baoknana , Baucnana , Bauknana ). The Suco Usitaco is already on the other side of the river. To the west of Citrana are the places Oehoso and Manan . Naktuka is the only state territory of East Timor west of the Noel Besi. The place Lamasi lies on the southeast border of Beneufes. Citrana has a primary school ( Escola Primaria Citrana ), a community health center and a helipad for emergencies. Baocnana also has such a landing site, a primary school and, in addition, a school to prepare for secondary school.

The three Aldeias Citrana , Lamasi and Manan are located in the Suco .

The region, which rises rapidly to 300  m above sea level , has the greatest variety of deciduous trees in Oe-Cusse Ambeno due to the low population density and poor accessibility. Pterocarpus are most common here . Gyrocarpus americanus can be found in dry places and Corypha utan near water . The highest mountain is the Manoleu at 1171  m in the center of the Sucos.

Residents

The Suco has 2801 inhabitants (2015), of which 1452 are men and 1349 women. The population density is 23.4 inhabitants / km². There are 605 households in the Suco. Almost 100% of the residents name Baikeno as their mother tongue. Only a small minority speaks Tetum Prasa .

history

On the 1899 map, according to which Portugal and the Netherlands agreed to draw the border, Naktuka was part of Portugal. This is what East Timor’s claim to the area is based on.
Post of the East Timorese border police in Citrana

In September 2009, a group of Indonesian soldiers drove to the East Timorese village of Naktuka and began taking photos of newly constructed buildings. They were thrown out by the residents and sent back across the border. On May 26, 2010, 28 armed soldiers from the Indonesian armed forces broke into Beneufe and raised their flags in Naktuka , one kilometer from the border. On May 29, 2010, they destroyed the two houses of two social institutions in Suco. On June 24, an armed unit of the Indonesian army again entered the Naktuka area one kilometer, but withdrew when they encountered a unit of the East Timorese border police. Residents see a connection with the unclear demarcation between the countries. This was the worst incident between the two countries since East Timor's independence in 2002. On March 4, 2011, Indonesian soldiers violated the border again and drove residents from the disputed strip of land. On October 28, 2011, Indonesian soldiers shot at East Timorese who had illegally crossed the border in a car. At the end of 2012, Fisen Falo , a Lian Nain , was found murdered in Naktuka. Some houses are also said to have been burned down by strangers. According to press reports, he was kidnapped by strangers while working in the fields and tortured to death. Indonesian soldiers were rumored to be suspected. The Secretary of State for Security Francisco da Costa Guterres dispatched an investigation team. The border was closed in the area for the time being.

politics

In the 2004/2005 elections , António Simão S. de Carvalho was elected Chefe de Suco. In the 2009 elections , António SS de Carvalho won .

economy
