Arsénio Paixão Bano (born March 23, 1974 in Oe-Cusse Ambeno , Portuguese Timor ) is a politician from East Timor . He belongs to the left-wing FRETILIN .

Bano originally began a management degree in Indonesia , which he had to drop out after jumping over the wall of the United States Embassy in Jakarta with other students in November 1994 to draw attention to the situation in East Timor during the Indonesian occupation. After twelve days of occupying the embassy, ​​Bano was able to leave for Portugal , from where he went to London . Here he worked for the human rights organization TAPOL as a Campaign and Research Assistant .

On October 6, 1999, Bano returned to East Timor after the Indonesians had withdrawn and initially worked for the RENETIL student movement and the CNRT , the umbrella organization of the East Timorese independence movement. Under the UN administration of East Timor , Bano worked from 2000 as Executive Director of the East Timor NGO Forum FONGTIL , an umbrella organization that coordinated the work of local and international non-governmental organizations in the country and provided them with information. At the same time he was chairman of the Fundacão Fatu Sinai Oe-cusse FFSO and the managing director of Tolas , a human rights newspaper in East Timor.

Bano speaks Baikeno (the language of his hometown), Tetum , Portuguese , English and Bahasa Indonesia .

Political offices

From September 30, 2001, Bano was State Secretary for “Work and Solidarity”. On July 26, 2005, he was appointed minister. After the elections on June 30, 2007 , Bano was replaced by Maria Domingas Alves , who now headed the Ministry for “Social Solidarity”.

Since July 30, 2007, Bano has been the deputy chairman of FRETILIN. With his election the generation change should be prepared. So far, the politicians of the independence movement of the 1970s have led the party. From 2007 to 2012 he was a member of parliament . He was third on his party's electoral list. In the parliamentary elections in 2012 , Bano was no longer on the electoral list.

He later became project manager and technical team coordinator of the special zone for social market economy ( tetum Zona Espesial Ekonomiko Sosial no Merkadu , ZEESM) Oe-Cusse Ambeno. On January 23, 2015, Bano was appointed a member of the authority of the Oe-Cusse Ambeno Special Administrative Region.

From 2017 to 2018, Bano Marí Bin Amude replaced Alkatiri as President of the Regional Authority of Oe-Cusse Ambeno while he was Prime Minister . After Alkatiris was voted out, he returned to the post in Oe-Cusse Ambeno. However, his term in office was limited by law to July 2019 and the new government signaled that it would not extend it. Alkatiri therefore waived further claims and resigned at the end of his term of office. Bano was therefore reappointed Interim President of the regional authority on August 1, 2019 , until José Luís Guterres took over the office in November . But when he was dismissed on June 10, 2020, Bano was appointed regular president on June 12.

Bano is a member of the Central Committee of FRETILIN (CCF) and its National Political Commission .

Private

Bano has been married to human rights activist Kerry Brogan since 1998. The couple has three children.
