Filomeno Jacob

The Filomeno Jacob Abel SJ (* 1960 in Dili , Portuguese Timor ) is an East Timorese Roman Catholic priest and former Minister.

Career

In 1982 Jacob received his Baccalauréat in Philosophy at the Sekolah Tinggi Filsafat / Teologi Katolik in Ledalero on Flores (Indonesia) and in 1988 a Baccalauréat in Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University . In 1992 he obtained a degree in moral theology at the Institut d'Etudes Théologiques de Bruxelles and in 1997 a doctorate in social and cultural anthropology at the University of Oxford . In 1998 Jacob was ordained a priest in the Society of Jesus .

On July 12, 2000, the National Consultative Council (NCC) established the First Interim Government of East Timor under the United Nations Interim Administration for East Timor (UNTAET) from Sérgio Vieira de Mello . Jacob became Minister of Social Affairs in the government as a representative of the Roman Catholic Church . The transitional government was in office until September 30, 2001. He was also responsible for education. Other public offices in the country and with the East Timorese Church followed. Jacob is responsible for the reintroduction of Portuguese as a language in the educational sector of East Timor after the Indonesian occupation (1975-1999).

In 2014 Jacob was appointed to the Gregorian Faculty of Social Sciences. He taught courses in the sociology of religion , international relations, culture and power, and conflict and peace. In 2017/2018 he gave courses in the field of anthropology of religions, international geopolitics, culture and power and the construction of reality. Within the university he also works as the Rector's delegate in the Foreign Office.
