Uniformed services of the United States (German uniformed services of the United States ) is - according to Title 10 of the United States Code - a collective term for the eight uniformed services of the US federal authorities.

definition

Title 10 of the United States Code finally lists all Uniformed Services and thus persons at the federal level of the United States who fall under military legislation. According to Title 10 § 101 (a) (5):

Armed forces

The armed forces consist of six armed forces. Five of these are assigned to the United States Department of Defense :

Department of the Army (DA)

Department of the Navy (DON)

Department of the Air Force (DAF)

The sixth branch, the United States Coast Guard (Coast Guard), is assigned to the armed forces, but at the same time takes on police and other tasks. It is an agency subordinate to the Department of Homeland Security of the United States , but can be subordinated to the Department of Defense in the event of war or by decree of the US President of the United States Navy .

Uniformed services outside the armed forces

The Commissioned Officer Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Commissioned Corps of the United States Public Health Service are uniform services within civil federal agencies, i.e. outside the armed forces.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is an agency of the Department of Commerce . The United States Public Health Service is an agency of the Department of Health .

The Commissioned Corps of both federal authorities consist - as the name Commissioned already suggests - only officers without crew or NCO ranks. With the exception of military jurisdiction, to which they are not subject, all of the rights and duties of an officer under Title 10 apply to them. Uniforms are worn on duty that are based on the uniform of the US Navy, but with different insignia. The Commissioned Corps can be militarized by ordinance of the US President, are therefore subject to military jurisdiction and can then receive combatant status as part of the armed forces .
