Anthony Butterworth

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anthony Butterworth (* 1945 in Luton ) is a British physician known for research into the epidemiology and immunology of schistosomiasis .

Butterworth studied medicine at Cambridge University (bachelor degrees such as MB 1969). In 1973 he received his doctorate there. He worked in research in many countries in Africa and South and Central America. In the 2000s, he was at the Biomedical Research and Training Institute in Harare , Zimbabwe , overseeing research on malaria, tuberculosis, AIDS and other diseases. He is currently in Malawi .

In the 1970s, as a scientist at the Wellcome Trust Research Laboratories in Nairobi , he showed the role of eosinophilic granulocytes (in interaction with certain antibodies) in the immune defense against schistosomiasis and later explained the defense mechanism used in more detail at Harvard Medical School (they contain granules with toxic substances that they release against the parasite). Before that, eosinophils were mainly known for their role in allergy .

In studies in Kenya and Uganda, he showed that some people develop immunity to schistosomiasis, with an increase in immunoglobulin E antibodies, which act against the worm and form starting points for the development of vaccines.

He also studied the interaction of schistosomiasis with other diseases and, with his wife Liz Corbett, of AIDS and tuberculosis among miners in South Africa.

In 1990 he and André Capron received the König Faisal Prize in Medicine. In 1994 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society and is a member of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. In 1990 he received their Chalmers Medal. In 1987 he received the Bernhard Nocht Medal .
