Robert Vaes

Robert Vaes (born January 9, 1919 in Antwerp , † 2000 in London ) is a former Belgian diplomat .

Life

Robert Vaes studied at the Free University of Brussels , received his doctorate in law , worked as a barrister from 1942 to 1946 and entered the foreign service in 1946. He married Anne Albers on July 22, 1947 in New York City ; her daughter is Corinne Vaes. From 1947 to 1949 he was accredited in Washington, DC , from 1949 to 1954 in Paris , from 1954 to 1956 in Hong Kong and from 1956 to 1958 in London.

From 1958 to 1960 he was private secretary to the Belgian Foreign Minister. From 1960 to 1963 he represented the Belgian government at the OECD in Rome . From 1964 to 1966 he headed the Politics department at the Foreign Ministry in Brussels. From 1966 to 1972 he was Secretary General of the Belgian Foreign Ministry.

From January 1972 to 1976 he was the Belgian ambassador in Madrid . From February 17, 1977 to 1981 he was Ambassador to the Court of St James’s and attended the funeral of Earl Mountbatten .
