The Union Monument in Vanceburg is a war memorial in Lewis County and commemorates soldiers of the Union Army in the Civil War . Located in Vanceburg , Kentucky , it is the only such memorial south of the Mason-Dixon Line to honor Union soldiers outside of cemeteries in public places.

The monument was built in 1884 by the citizens of Lewis County. These formed a stronghold of Union supporters during the Civil War and lived in one of the few areas in Kentucky where the majority of the population still sympathized with the Union cause in the 1880s. The monument has a height of 10.4 m and both the column and the base of the monument are made of limestone . The base has a height of 1.5 m, a width of 2.1 m and is composed of eight individual parts. The statue depicts a Union soldier in winter clothing wearing a cap.

The inscription reads:

"The war for the Union was right, forever right, and the war against the Union was wrong, forever wrong."

A total of 107 Lewis County men died serving as Union soldiers during the war; their names are carved into the monument.

On June 17, 1997, the Union Monument in Vanceburg was registered with 60 other war memorials in Kentucky on the National Register of Historic Places . Most of these monuments were erected in memory of Confederate soldiers. The only other Civil War memorial in Kentucky that declares strong feelings for the Union is the Captain Andrew Offutt Monument in Lebanon . Other war memorials in Kentucky that exclusively commemorate fallen Union Army soldiers include the 32nd Indiana Monument in Louisville, the GAR Monument in Covington , the Union Monument in Louisville, and the Union Monument in Perryville .
