The Union Foundation is a non-profit, party - affiliated foundation based in Saarbrücken (Malstatt). It was founded on August 1, 1959 and is close to the CDU . According to its statutes, the foundation pursues the goal of promoting democratic and civic education, contributing to international understanding, in particular European unification, and promoting science, research and culture, and describes itself as "working on the basis of a Christian image of man". The financial resources come from purely private sources and are independent of the public sector and political parties . Business operations are not geared towards economic interests . The events, some of which last several days, are usually free of charge. The foundation is also the (co-) editor of books and other publications.

Since the year it was founded, the Union Foundation has been organizing lectures, seminars and specialist conferences that are open to interested private individuals. In doing so, she tries to incorporate current issues from politics and society into the events.

“From 1959-1980, Prime Minister Röder dominated events within the party as the 'father of the country', which 'had a direct detrimental effect on the full-time apparatus of the party' and led to a pronounced 'introversion' of state politics (Bauer 1981, pp. 92-159 ). Another special feature is the Union Foundation, which has taken over the assets of the old CVP and makes an 'important contribution to the financial relief of the regional association' (Bauer 1981, page 97), as well as the fact that here with 28% (1969 ) or 25% (1980) the highest proportion of workers among members is recorded within the CDU (Schönbohm 1985).
