from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Union pour la Majorité Présidentielle ( UMP , Union for the President's Majority or Union for a Presidential Majority) is a coalition of parties founded in 2003 that governs Djibouti . It is dominated by the Rassemblement Populaire pour le Progrès (RPP).

Already in the 1997 parliamentary elections , the RPP joined together with the former rebel group FRUD on. The two parties won all 65 seats in the National Assembly with 78.6% of the vote , of which the RPP received 56 and the FRUD 11. In the 1999 presidential elections , both parties supported Ismail Omar Guelleh , who won 74% against an independent candidate.

For the 2003 parliamentary elections , the RPP and FRUD joined forces with the two smaller parties Parti National Démocratique (PND) and Parti Populaire Social Démocratique (PPSD) to form the UMP, while the four approved opposition parties formed the UAD . With a 62.7% share of the vote, the UMP again won all parliamentary seats due to the majority voting system . The opposition accused of electoral fraud and boycotted the 2005 presidential and 2008 general elections . In these elections, the UMP therefore ran without competitors.
