Andreas Mehler

Andreas Mehler (born February 2, 1963 ) is a German political scientist and Africa expert. Mehler has headed the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute in Freiburg since October 2015 and is Professor of Development Theories and Development Policy at the Political Science Department of the University of Freiburg .

Life

Mehler studied political science and history at the University of Mannheim . For his master's thesis on “The post-colonial states of Black Africa between legitimacy and repression”, he was awarded the Lorenz von Stein Prize of the University of Mannheim for the best social science thesis in 1988. His dissertation with the title “Cameroon in the Biya era. Conditions, first steps and blockades of a democratic transition ”he presented in 1993, his habilitation with the title“ African Security - changing perspectives on a rare good and its providers ”in 2011.

After positions as a research assistant at the University of Hamburg (1989–1992), at the Institute for African Studies in Hamburg (1994–1999) and at the EU Conflict Prevention Network in Berlin (2000–2002), he took on the position of Director of the GIGA Institute for Africa Studies in Hamburg.       

Mehler is the initiator and chairman of the executive board of the Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa as well as a founding member and chairman of the board of CrossArea eV He was both deputy chairman and treasurer of the Association for African Studies in Germany (VAD; 2002-2016) and a member of the board of AEGIS (Africa-Europe Group for Interdisciplinary Studies; 2008–2016), member of the advisory board of the Federal President's initiative “Partnership with Africa” (2005–2008) and member of the advisory board for conflict prevention of the federal government (2013–2015).

In 2015 Mehler was appointed to the professorship of Development Theories and Development Policy at the Political Science Department of the University of Freiburg . Part of the professorship is also the management of the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute in Freiburg, which is part of the university . His main research interests are power sharing after a peace agreement, violent conflicts, crisis prevention , state and statehood, German and French Africa policy.

Fonts

From 2009 to 2018 Mehler was co-editor of the scientific open access journal Africa Spectrum (together with Henning Melber ; last issue under this editorial office was 1/2018). Together with various co-editors, he publishes the annual “Africa Yearbook. Politics, Economy and Society South of the Sahara ”at Brill (Leiden; 2005 - ongoing). He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Boards of African Affairs , Critique Internationale and International Area Studies Review.
