University class or Tübingen class is the name of a series of motor ships of the shipping company Hamburg-Amerika-Linie . The series was named because all ships were baptized in the name of university towns, but is also named after the type ship Tübingen . The series of this type of ship built between 1955 and 1959 by Howaldtswerke shipyard in Hamburg comprised seven units.

The ships

  • The first ship in the Hapag series was the Tübingen with hull number 899 , which was handed over in October 1955. It remained in service with Hapag until 1970 and was then converted into the Ceena animal transporter (6135 BRT / 7080 tdw). The ship was named Al-Shuwaikh the following year . Another ten years later it was renamed Mukairish Althani . In 1986 the ship was sold to the demolition yard Moony Pvt Ltd in Gadani Beach , which began scrapping the ship on October 15, 1986.
  • The second ship of the series was the Göttingen, delivered in December 1955 with hull number 901 . She drove for Hapag until the rental sale in 1969 and then until 1983 as Twadika for the Indonesian shipping company PTPP Samudera. On October 28, 1983, the ship arrived in Kaohsiung for demolition at Hai Kwang Steel Enterprise Co; scrapping began on November 6, 1983.
  • The third ship of the series was the Erlangen, handed over on January 23, 1956 with the hull number 900 . On March 29, 1969, it was also given to the shipping company PTPP Samudera in Djakarta through a purchase lease , became the property of the Indonesian shipping company in August 1972 and was scrapped in China about twelve years later, in January 1984.
  • This was followed by Weimar , handed over in 1957 , which was launched on December 15, 1956 with construction number 917. In 1972 she was sold to Asia and drove first as Mingchang and from 1977 as Ying Shan . On October 20, 1979, the ship ran aground off Cape Erimo , Hokkaidō .
  • On August 14, 1957, the Wiesbaden with the build number 927 was launched. She drove from 1972 as Mingyao , from 1975 as Xiu Shan and was demolished in Dalian in 1985 .
  • The launch of the Wien followed on October 19, 1957 with the build number 928. It was also sold to Asia in 1972 and drove first as Mingwei , from 1975 as Yu Shan and from 1979 as Ba Shan , before being demolished in Su Zou in August 1984 .
  • The last ship of the series was launched on February 28, 1959 with hull number 904 as Worms . After renaming, in 1972 in Minglang and 1975 in Bao Shan , the ship was only deleted from the register in 1992.
