The Helsinki University Library ( finn. Helsingin yliopiston kirjasto , Swed. Helsingfors Universitets bibliotek ) is the University Library of the University of Helsinki and the largest library of its kind in Finland . It is not to be confused with the Finnish National Library , which was called Helsinki University Library until 2006 .

Emergence

The National Library of Finland originally functioned as the central library of the University of Helsinki, and until 2006 it was also called the University Library. After this library was renamed “National Library” in 2010, the various specialist libraries of the university, which had been organized on a decentralized basis, were combined into a new organizational unit, which has since been called the “University Library”. Nevertheless, the national library is still part of the university.

Most of the specialist libraries were also physically merged in 2012 when the new main building of the university library was completed. The building is located in Kaisaniemi on the university's central campus and is called the Kaisa House (Kaisa-talo) . Nearby is a branch called Minerva , whose collections are also due to move to the main building in spring 2015. There are further branches in the districts of Viikki , Meilahti and Kumpula .

Existence and use

The university library (excluding the national library) has printed holdings totaling 73.5 kilometers of shelves. It also offers around 26,500 electronic journals and 339,000 e-books. There are approximately 40,400 active users who borrow or renew items that have been printed about 2.6 million times a year (as of 2012).
