Carolina Rediviva is the main library of the University of Uppsala and one of the old, great buildings of the city . The name means Resurrected Carolina . This is a reference to the former university building, the Academia Carolina , named after Charles IX. The building is 350 meters south of the cathedral church .

The library was founded in 1622 and is the oldest and one of the largest in Sweden . The building was designed by Carl Fredrik Sundvall (1754–1831) and erected between 1819 and 1841. External renovations and additions took place from 1913 to 1917, for which the government provided 599,000 kroner.

In 1935 the building was placed under state protection as Byggnadsminne .

The building houses the Codex Argenteus from the 5th to 6th centuries. Century, which is one of the oldest written evidence in a Germanic language.
