Johan Niclas Byström (born December 18, 1783 in Filipstad , † March 13, 1848 in Italy ) was a Swedish sculptor .

Life

Byström's father was a merchant who initially trained him as a trader. Byström Siegel began engraving in his free time . When his father died, Johan was around 20 years old and with the inheritance he was able to realize his dream of traveling to Stockholm and studying there. His mentors in the capital were Johan Tobias Sergel and Louis Masreliez .

In 1809 he received the grand prize of the Royal Academy of Art and a travel grant. He then moved to Rome in June 1810 , which was to become his second home. In 1818 he leased the Villa Malta into which he had his studio built. In 1816 and 1821 Byström was briefly in Stockholm and in the last year mentioned he made a detour via England and Paris on the return trip to Rome . In 1816 he was appointed deputy professor at the Stockholm Art Academy and in 1832 he became a full professor. In the following years he lived mainly in Carrara , where he owned a house and a small marble quarry. He sold a large part of the architectural details and vases created there to the Swedish king in 1838.

When he finally decided to return to Stockholm in 1838, he had an Italian-style villa built on the island of Djurgården . According to various sources of the time, the villa was commissioned by Karl XIV. Johann , but since he died during the construction period, Byström took over the building himself. The facility consisted of many parts, his collection assembled in Italy.

In 1844, Byström's health deteriorated and he moved back to a milder climate in Italy, where he died in 1848. He testamented part of his fortune to Karolina Bygler, who was his housekeeper and model in Rome and was called Eleonora Bistrom by the Italians. His collection was auctioned off in 1853.
