The University Street , originally a new road , is a mere kilometer long road in the neighborhood Oberstrass in Zurich . The road belongs to the main axis from Bellevueplatz towards Winterthur .
course
Universitätsstrasse joins Rämistrasse at the Tannenstrasse intersection at ETH Zurich . It ends at Rigiplatz , where Winterthurerstrasse begins. Universitätsstrasse forms the main axis of the Oberstrass quarter. It is built on both sides with multi-storey houses with shops on the ground floor, as is typical for suburbs. At the beginning of the street are the Agriculture and Forestry Institute of the ETH Zurich (Univeristätsstrasse 2) and the chemistry building (Universitätsstrasse 6).
The Obere Strasse , the historic connection from Zurich to Winterthur, originally led via Sonneggstrasse and Culmannstrasse to Rigiplatz. A little to the east of it, the Universitätsstrasse was laid out from 1836 to 1838, which leads up the western slope of the Zürichberg , wider and without curves (height difference approx. 32 meters).
traffic
Universitätsstrasse is part of Hauptstrasse 17 and thus connects areas in the north of the city to the right bank of Lake Zurich .
From 1895 onwards, the Universitätsstrasse was used by the central Zürichbergbahn , the final stop was at Rigiplatz. Today tram lines 9 and 10 run on the street .
Surname
The street was named Universitätsstrasse in 1883, previously it was called Neue Landstrasse . The name of the street is misleading today, as the university is further south on Rämistrasse. Until 1914, however, the university was still housed in a part of the main ETH building that is at the beginning of the street.
