The University of Fukui ( Japanese 福井 大学 , Fukui daigaku , English University of Fukui ) is a state university in Japan . The main campus is located in Fukui in the Fukui Prefecture .
history
The (older) University of Fukui (English Fukui University ) was founded in 1949 through the merger of the three state schools. The three were:
- the normal school Fukui ( 福井 師範学校 , Fukui shihan gakkō in Sabae , founded in 1873),
- the normal youth school Fukui ( 福井 青年 師範学校 , Fukui his shihan gakkō in Sabae, founded in 1938), and
- the Fukui technical center ( 福井 工業 専 門 学校 , Fukui kōgyō semmon gakkō , founded in 1923).
The three schools were in Fukui city before World War II . The war (1945) and the Fukui earthquake (1948) destroyed the school buildings; the normal school and youth normal school moved to Sabae (where the teacher training department for women was located since 1928). The technical center remained in today's Bunkyō campus in the city of Fukui.
The (older) Fukui University opened with two faculties: Liberal Arts and Engineering. The Faculty of Liberal Arts moved to the Bunkyō campus in 1952 and renamed itself to the Faculty of Education in 1966, and then to the Faculty of Education and Regional Studies in 1999.
In 2003 the Medical University of Fukui ( 福井 医科大学 , Fukui ika daigaku , founded in 1978) was merged to form the University of Fukui.
