Impossible figure

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Impossible figures are graphically two-dimensional, supposedly three-dimensional constructs in art that cannot physically exist. The figures are either paradoxes or optical illusions . They were first developed by Oscar Reutersvärd ; the Dutch graphic artist MC Escher created numerous such impossible figures in the 20th century.

The solution to the contradiction results from the two-dimensional representation in two dimensions and the sensory perception as a three-dimensional structure.

In the article Penrose triangle you can find pictures of sculptures that, viewed / depicted from one perspective, appear roughly like a Penrose triangle.
