Hermitage of Our Lady

Our Lady of Longeborgne is a hermitage above the village of Bramois in the municipality of Sion in the canton of Valais ( Switzerland ). This place of pilgrimage is located at the foot of a rock face in the Borgne gorge . In the past, residents of the area used to take their belongings to safety here when danger threatened.

history

In 1522 the Franciscan Jean Bossié and six of his companions received permission to build a chapel in honor of Our Lady and St. Francis of Assisi . The humidity of the place affected the health of the hermits so much that they had to give up the hermitage a few years later. It remained orphaned for a century until lay brothers settled again in the hermitage.

Over time Longeborgne became a place of pilgrimage in honor of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows , today's patron saint of the hermitage. The numerous votive offerings on the walls of the two chapels testify to a deep popular piety that is still associated with Longeborgne today. Pilgrims are particularly numerous on the Fridays before Palm Sunday . On these days up to 300 people gather in the forecourt of the hermitage.

A document dated July 4, 1699, in which the patronage of the hermitage is transferred to the civil parish of Sion , also mentions several miracles that are said to have occurred in Longeborgne. In 1932, the Citizens' Council of Sitten entrusted the Benedictine pilgrimage church to the Abbey of St-Benoît de Port-Valais , who had already settled in Longeborgne a few years earlier.
