history

First mentioned at the end of the 8th century under the name Bramosium, German Brämis. Around 1450 40–50 households. Individual finds come from the Latène period. Around 800, the Abbey of Saint-Maurice owned a Bramois estate, the receipt of which it dated to 515. As a result, Bramois passed to the cathedral chapter of Sion , which held ecclesiastical and secular jurisdiction in the 14th century. Usurped by the Viztumen von Sitten, the Vice Dominate Bramois was bought in 1569 by the city of Sitten; until 1798 it was under a Kastlan . A village cooperative is first recorded in 1302. A chancel dates from the late 5th century. The parish church (Laurentius-Patrozinium) is mentioned from 1278, but was probably built around 1000. In 1522 the Longeborgne hermitage was founded. Small trades shaped the economy of Bramois: lime kilns (17th century), copper mining (after 1836), anthracite mining, hat manufacture (1872), cloth and beer production (around 1900). In 1895 Bramois received an electricity company. The village has recently developed into a residential suburb of Sitten. The German language is on the decline: in 1860 67 of 104 households, in 1900 40% of the population, in 1960 9%.
