The lower castle is a listed cellar vault in Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt .

It is located in Magdeburg's old town east of the Sankt-Johannis-Kirche , below its choir, but across it. A little further to the east, the Bone Hauerufer runs . Originally the lower castle belonged to the property at Kniehauerufer 79, the house at the lower castle . It is currently included in the Johannisbergstrasse , which runs south . The currently unnamed Stieg, originally named Tannenberg, runs to the north.

Plant and history

The two-aisled vaulted cellar, which dates back to the Middle Ages and was probably built in the 12th century, is 24 meters long and is spanned by a barrel vault. Both ships are connected to each other by means of round arches resting on massive pillars. The floor is made of bricks, underneath is rubble dating from the 17th century.

The cellar is considered to be the remains of the medieval city of Magdeburg, which was destroyed in 1631 . The Zur Unterburg house was destroyed in the Second World War. Today the property is part of a park. A staircase provides access to the basement, the entrance of which is secured by an above-ground housing.

In 2010 the basement was cleared of rubble, secured and documented as part of a job promotion measure by GISE mbH. There were ideas to make the cellar accessible as an exhibition space, especially for the history of the area known as the Knattergebirge, which was destroyed in the Second World War . Currently (as of 2016), however, the lower castle is still unused and not accessible to the public.

In the local register of monuments , the cellar is listed as a monument under registration number 094 76852 .
