The lower gate (east side)

The Lower Gate is a former city gate of the Upper Swabian city of Mindelheim . It was first mentioned in 1263.

location

The gate forms the western entrance to the old town and limits it. To the north of the gate tower is the former Jesuit church, without a tower, of the Annunciation .

history

The gate was first mentioned in 1263. In the 13th and 14th centuries it was nicknamed the Schnäbelinstor after the Mindelheim citizen Ulrich Schnäbelin sold the property to the north to the Augustinians , who built their monastery on it. From the 15th to the 17th century it was also known as the monastery gate . The names Brudertor and Bläserturm can also be read in ancient scripts. The current shape dates from the second half of the 14th century. A porch in front of the gate was demolished in 1877. More recently, a breakthrough for pedestrians has been created in the northern part of the building.

Building description

The gate tower has a height of 40 meters, a passage with pointed arches and a barrel vault in this passage. The seven-storey building has irregularly distributed square openings, which are usually designed as slots with a cantilever. On the inside there is a round arch niche with a wooden Virgin Mary from the second half of the 15th century at about the height of the second floor. This wooden statue was reworked in baroque style . To the side of this niche there are murals of Saint Joseph and Saint Joachim . These pictures were painted in 1957 by the Mindelheim painter Max Beringer . The pictures previously hung there, which were painted on wood, had to give way to the new pictures due to severe weathering. The complete group of three with panels, painted canopy and putti were renewed after baroque remains. A large, framed segmental arch panel is located on the west side at the level of the first floor. The former porch can still be recognized by the approach of two gables, which are superimposed on the west facade. There are also a few remains of the earlier painting. The roof is a flat tent roof on which a square lantern is placed. This has a pointed helmet. The slate cover is more recent. Inside the gate there are wooden beam ceilings. The top floor was previously used as an apartment for the city and fire guard.
