Upfield Holdings is a multinational food company focusing on plant-based spreads (especially margarine ), headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The company was created through the spin-off and sale of the former spreading division of the Unilever Group.

Upfield has 3,100 employees worldwide. In Germany, Upfield operates plants in Kleve and Wittenberg .

history

In 1869 the French chemist Hippolyte Mège-Mouriès developed on behalf of the French government under Napoleon III. the first plant-based spread ( margarine ). Two years later, the Dutch entrepreneur Anton Jurgens acquired the patent and began producing margarine on an industrial scale in the Netherlands and Germany. His company merged in 1927 with the family business van den Bergh to form Margarine Union and in 1929/30 with the soap factory Lever to form Unilever . In December 2017, Unilever announced that it would sell its margarine and spreads division. The sale was completed on July 2, 2018. With the exception of the South African business, which went to Remgro , the business was sold to the financial investor KKR , who continued it as Upfield Holdings .

Brands

The company's best-known brands include Becel , Lätta and Rama , in Switzerland also Sais and in Austria Flora Plant.
