The Upper Baker Dam is a dam that dams the Baker River in Whatcom County , Washington state . It is one of two dams on the river. The other, Lower Baker Dam , is a few miles downstream. The dam produces electrical energy and is used for flood protection.
Construction was completed in 1959 by Puget Sound Energy as part of a power generation plan, the Baker River Hydroelectric Project. The dam is a 95 m high and 370 m long gravity dam made of concrete on the crown , the power plant of which is to produce 337.35 million kWh of electricity annually with an output of 91 MW . It is fed by three lines with a total capacity of 2,500 cubic meters per second. The reservoir covers 19 km² and contains around 352 million m³ of water.
