Urano Teixeira da Matta Bacellar (born August 20, 1947 in Bagé , Brazil , † January 7, 2006 in Port-au-Prince ) was a Brazilian general and UN commander in Haiti .

Bacellar had served in the Brazilian army for 39 years, and most recently held the rank of lieutenant general .

In September 2005 he became the new UN commander of the MINUSTAH mission in Haiti. He was given command of the 9,000-strong UN contingent there . Its task was to get violence and rioting under control, especially in the capital Port-au-Prince . Since the disempowerment of President Aristide in 2004, UN soldiers have tried unsuccessfully to restore peace and order. The commander of the UN peacekeeping force in Haiti was found shot dead in his office on January 7, 2006 . United Nations officials suspect that it is suicide .
