DARPA Urban Challenge 2007
The DARPA Urban Challenge 2007 is a race between autonomous robotic vehicles that took place on November 3, 2007 in Victorville, CA at the former George Air Force Base .
The race is the third competition in the program initiated by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to promote the development of autonomous vehicles. In contrast to the two previous races, in which an essentially straight course had to be completed across the desert, the third race takes place in the built-up area of an abandoned barracks of the former Air Force base at George Air Force Base. For the team, which was the first to complete a 60-mile course, divided into three missions, in less than 6 hours, the DARPA announced prize money totaling 3.5 million US dollars. The first three teams to reach the goal in the shortest possible time and have the fewest deductions for rule violations will receive $ 2 million, $ 1 million and $ 500,000, respectively. The DARPA Urban Challenge 2007 was won by the Tartan Racing team, the Stanford Racing Team came second and the VictorTango team came third . The German finalists AnnieWay (University of Karlsruhe) and CarOLO (TU Braunschweig, follow-up project : Stadtpilot ) dropped out during the race due to technical difficulties (AnnieWay: probably computer error, stopped when entering a roundabout; CarOLO: bent sensors after colliding with the team MIT). The VW Passat Junior of the Stanford Racing Team , developed under the leadership of the German-born professor Sebastian Thrun was indeed the first in the finish line, but got a time penalty for a slight violation of the California Highway Code. Oshkosh's truck was stopped just before it hit a house wall. MIT and Cornell had another collision, but both were able to continue.
Attendees
The participating teams are distinguished by the DARPA in Track A and Track B, whereby participants in Track A receive up to 1 million dollars in financial support in the development from the DARPA in addition to the eventual victory prizes.
A total of eleven teams have qualified for the sponsored participation in Track A. Another 78 teams have registered to take part in Track B, including international teams from Australia, China, Germany, France, Mexico, New Zealand and Austria.
