Urban Frey (born March 17, 1964 in Frauenfeld ) is a Swiss pan flute player and composer .

biography

Urban Frey grew up in Frauenfeld. From 1987 to 1994 he majored in pan flute at the Winterthur Conservatory in the flute class of Marianne Stucki and at the University of the Arts in Amsterdam in the pan flute class of Nicolae Pirvou. was the first Swiss to receive a teaching and concert diploma on the pan flute. From 2006 to 2009, he completed the “Master in Advanced Studies in Music Management” at the Bern University of the Arts. During the Ceausescu regime, he visited Romania from 1985 to 1989, where he studied Romanian folklore and received pan flute lessons from Dorel Manea. Master classes with Gheorghe Zamfir followed later .

In 2005, Frey received a grant from the canton of Thurgau in the field of serious music. From 1982 to 1999 Frey ran his own pan flute school in Frauenfeld and taught the instrument at various music schools in the cantons of Thurgau and Zurich. He is approved as a trainer for professional students. He also directed the music schools in Thurtal-Seerücken (TG) and Muttenz (BL). Since 2014 he has been the head of the main school at the Zürcher Unterland music school, which employs 140 teachers and teaches 5,000 young people and children.

Urban Frey is committed to the recognition of the pan flute in classical concerts and in 2012 was co-founder of the first “Pan Flute Festival Switzerland” in Winterthur. With the “Urban Frey Jazz Quintet” he has been expanding the spectrum of the instrument to include jazz since 2017. He is on tour with changing formations and plays works from baroque to modern as well as traditional music.

In 2018 he was the soloist of the world premiere Concert for Panpipe and Large Orchestra by Fabian Müller with the Orchester Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz under the direction of Ari Raislainen in the Council of Konstanz. Frey has premiered works - among others by Jürg Rutishauser, Frédéric Bolli , Franz Winteler and his own works - and has released first recordings for pan flute on 9 CDs.
