Urban hacking

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term urban hacking ( urban - urban; hacking - in the sense of penetrating, changing ) or culture jamming is the collective term for a series of activities or actions that are related to social or political protest. Various advertising campaigns and art objects or art campaigns can also be referred to as urban hacking .

procedure

In contrast to the flash mob , the greatest possible gathering of people for a planned action is not important. The sense of urban hacking is to attract attention through small, targeted and creative actions. For example, many people queue up at a bank counter even though the counter next to it is free, or identical twins sit on opposite seats in a subway.

Urban hacking can do without the direct presence of the actor. For the art exhibition paraflows 09 , for example, a programmable lawnmower was developed that can draw any vector graphics in meadows with the help of a Bunsen burner. During the exhibition, the Karlsplatz in Vienna was exposed to yawns to symbolize the rapid spread of a virus (yawn reflex) .

Prominent examples

  • Audi Sweden equipped a garbage can with a music system for some advertising campaigns . At the end of the campaign, 41 kilograms more rubbish were thrown in the garbage can than on a normal day. In a further action, the stairs of a subway station were underlaid with piano tones. Compared to a normal day, 66 percent more people used the piano stairs instead of the escalator right next to it. These campaigns were intended to draw attention to Volkswagen's economical Bluemotion technology .
