Urbano da Cortona (* around 1426 in Cortona ; † 1504 in Siena ) was an Italian sculptor and painter.
biography
He began as Donatello's assistant in Padua , then worked in Perugia (tomb of Bishop Baglioni in the cathedral , 1451) and settled in Siena, where he was involved in the construction of the cathedral . He was the head of a workshop that was very active in the city as well as in the territory of the Republic of Siena.
His well-known works include the twelve reliefs with scenes from the life of Mary, originally in the chapel of the Madonna delle Grazie (demolished in the 17th century) and today on the inner portal of the cathedral of Siena , as well as a Madonna from the Chigi-Saracini collection ( 1455–1460) and the marble bench on the left in the Loggia della Mercanzia (1462).
