The Río San Juan is an approximately 140 km long right tributary of the Río Mira in the western border area of Ecuador and Colombia .

River course

The Río San Juan has its source in Colombia at an altitude of about 3600  m . The headwaters are in the Nudo de los Pastos on the northern flank of the 4723  m high volcano of Chile . The river runs in a predominantly west-northwest direction. After about 15 km it reaches the border between Colombia and Ecuador. Then it forms the state border up to its mouth. South of the river is the Ecuadorian province of Carchi , north of the Colombian administrative district Departamento de Nariño . At river kilometer 24 the Río Gualpi flows into the river on the left. 4.5 km above the confluence with the Río Mira, the Rìo Camumbí meets the Río San Juan when coming from the south.

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Río Juan covers about 1350 km². In the east it borders on that of the Río Carchi , which flows over the Río Patía to the Pacific Ocean .
