The original beech from the southwest, 2007

The original beech was a natural monument and stood above Mitgenfeld , a district of Oberleichtersbach , about four kilometers southeast of Bad Brückenau in the Bad Kissingen district in the Bavarian Rhön . The common beech ( Fagus sylvatica ) stands at about 530 meters above sea level on the southern slope of the Pilsterberge. The beech is listed with the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Bad Kissingen district as a natural monument with the number 672-N / 016 and the designation Urbuche . The beech broke apart in May 2013. New plantings were made to the side of the remains.

description

Split trunk of the original beech , 2007

The trunk is completely hollowed out and consists of only two damaged outer trunk parts, which make up about half of the original trunk. They are covered with bark , which indicates that they were destroyed several decades ago. In the spring storms of 1990 (the hurricanes Daria , Herta, Judith, Nana, Ottilie, Polly, Vivian and Wiebke ) the beech was badly damaged. A large star branch broke from the crown. The central axis of the crown and the core of the trunk are completely absent. The crown is now mainly formed by younger, regrown branches.

Around the year 2000 the trunk had a circumference of 6.63 meters at the point of its smallest diameter and at one meter height of 7.08 meters. The age of the beech is given in the literature as 200 to 300 years. The Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Bad Kissingen district states that the beech tree is 300 to 400 years old. The beech is one of the strongest and oldest in Germany. If you were to reconstruct the trunk to its actual diameter, it would have a circumference of around 7.6 meters.

On the night of September 29th to 30th, 2008, the beech tree was set on fire by an unknown perpetrator directly on the trunk, causing damage. During the fire, parts of the trunk dissolved so that the trunk circumference was reduced. At the point of its smallest diameter, the trunk had a circumference of 6.36 meters in 2008 and a height of 6.80 meters.

On the night of May 13-14, 2013, the original beech broke apart. A few weeks before, representatives of the Lower Nature Conservation Authority discovered a crack on one side, which is why the beech should be renovated. The branches should receive supports and the crown protection should also be renewed.
