Overview map Rhön
Picture oak near Albertshausen
(7.01 meters trunk circumference)

The list of the thickest trees in the Rhön includes trees in the Rhön , a German low mountain range in the border area of the states of Bavaria , Hesse and Thuringia , with a trunk circumference of at least six meters. These trees are in the districts of Bad Kissingen (fourteen), Rhön-Grabfeld (eight), Fulda (six) and Schmalkalden-Meiningen (three). The list contains eleven oaks , ten beeches , nine linden trees and one poplar .

For each tree, information about the location is listed, such as location, district, state, altitude and coordinates. Furthermore, the tree species , the natural monument status , the estimated age, the height of the tree, the diameter of its crown and, last but not least, the circumference of its trunk are mentioned.

The thickest single-stemmed oak according to the trunk circumference measured at the waist is the pedunculate oak at Thurmgut near Hermannsfeld with 7.63 meters, the thickest single- stem beech is a red beech near Roth with 7.55 meters, while the seven-stem beech near Diebach has a circumference at chest height of 7.70 meters; the thickest linden tree in the Rhön is the village linden tree in Harbach with 7.72 meters, a summer linden tree . One of the oldest trees in this area is the picture oak near Albertshausen (7.01 meters in circumference), which is estimated to be up to 600 years old.

selection

The trees are selected based on the trunk size, which is always synonymous with old age. The limit area is at the point of the smallest circumference at six meters. If this dimension is less than six meters, a combination (mean) with the circumference at a height of one meter is decisive. For the German Tree Archives this corresponds to trees of local importance (LBB) to regionally important trees (RBB). Hans Joachim Fröhlich - initiator of the curatorium of old lovable trees in Germany  - writes about trees of this size, an "old age that goes far beyond the economic age, [a] special size and shape so that the trees are normal in height and trunk diameter exceed known dimensions and take on an impressive shape through growth and appearance. "
