Reither oak

The thousand year old oak near Reith is a natural monument northwest of Reith , a district of Oberthulba , in the Bavarian Rhön at an altitude of about 290  m above sea level. NHN . The pedunculate oak stands completely free in a meadow on the outskirts, to the north there is a forest area. In earlier times, local festivities were held near the oak. The oak was placed under nature protection for the first time on September 25, 1959 and again on February 2, 1987 . The oak with the number 672-N / 071 and the designation "Oak in Reith" is listed by the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Bad Kissingen district .

description

High notch trunk

What is striking about the oak is the powerful trunk approach with the above-ground roots. The roots are laid out like supports above the ground, only to then penetrate into the ground. The roots strive, partially exposed, several meters away from the trunk. Measurements showed a root circumference of more than 16 meters. The root area merges into a compact, short trunk, which divides into several strong branches at a height of two meters, with the strongest branch having a diameter of over one meter. The branches interlock and are strongly curved, as can hardly be seen in any other oak in Germany. The strong branches are held together by several steel cables. The crown has grown very evenly and harmoniously and has only a small amount of dead wood. The bark shows peculiar flow patterns in several places, which differ greatly from the otherwise halfway straight lines of the bark. The oak is heavily mossed on the west side ( weather side ) from the roots over the trunk to the crown .

View from the northwest

The trunk has a large indentation on the south side that extends from the ground to a height of about three meters. On the opposite side there is another, slightly smaller notch. The notches reach up to about a third into the trunk and were scraped down to the healthy heartwood during renovation and braced with iron pipes. The larger notch is also closed with a close-meshed wire fence. The age of the oak is given in the literature as 400 to 500 years. The Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Bad Kissingen district specifies the age of the oak as 500 years. The trunk circumference was in 1990 at a height of 1.3 meters 5.2 meters. In 2011 the trunk had a circumference of 6.06 meters at the point of its smallest diameter, at a height of 1.20 meters. Measurements in 1992, which were also taken at the point with the smallest circumference, showed 5.62 meters. The trunk circumference increases by about 2.5 centimeters per year, which is a lot for an oak of this size. This increase in growth indicates an age of 250 to a maximum of 300 years. Measured at a height of one meter, the trunk circumference was 6.19 meters in 2009. The height of the oak is 18 and the crown diameter 19 meters.

Blackboard with poem

A wooden plaque with the following poem was attached to the trunk in 1927:

Divine rule
Got me.
Despite all the dangers
For a thousand years.
Honor old age at all times;
God with my home
Reith.
