The weather side is the side of an object in the open air (e.g. building, tree, etc.) that is mainly exposed to wind and precipitation , i.e. the " weather ". This side is also known as the side facing the weather .

Exposed trees at the edge of the forest or on mountain tops, rocks, etc. The like. are overgrown with moss and lichen on the weather side , as these can absorb more moisture from the air there. Individual trees lean (flee) in the opposite direction and form flag-like crowns . These are the so-called wind evacuators . In the case of conifers that are exposed to strong wind, the branches on the weather side can be significantly shorter than the leeward branches or may be absent at all.

Ice formations from freezing fog grow on a free-standing obstacle against the prevailing wind direction, i.e. against the wind on the weather side.

On the weather side weather components made of wood in buildings ( window , doors , claddings) and corrode components made of metal ( gutters ) faster than on the sides facing away from the weather. Traditionally, other or additional structural measures are often taken on the weather side (e.g. cladding, plastering).

If there is a pronounced weather side, it can be used to estimate the cardinal points. However, small-scale deviations from the general weather side are quite possible, which makes this type of orientation not particularly reliable.
