Urchin software

Urchin was software that graphically displayed the behavior of users on a website . It was originally developed by the US company Urchin Software Corporation in 1998. After the purchase by the US company Google Inc. in 2005, further development of the software was finally stopped in March 2012.

historical development

Paul Muret began in 1998 with some fellow students to develop software for the graphical analysis of web server log files. In 2004 the software was available in two versions:

  • Urchin Version 5.7.03 (purchase software, installed on its own server)
  • Urchin on Demand ( ASP solution; also known as version 6)

In spring 2005 the Urchin Software Corporation was taken over by Google Inc. The Urchin on Demand product was renamed Google Analytics in November 2005 and released for free use. The retail version of Urchin was further developed by Google and released in spring 2008 in version 6.4.00 (only with an English user interface). This version was reminiscent of the look and feel of the first version of Google Analytics.

Version 6 displays the graphically prepared data in 114 reports, which are distributed among the five report sections Web optimization, marketing optimization, content optimization, e-commerce analysis and IT reports. The individual reports are each described with a short help text. In Urchin up to 1,000 profiles and 1,000 log sources (in version 6.6.02 up to 3,000 log sources and from version 6.6.03 without log source limitation) can be set up.

Other milestones in the development of Urchin Software since then have been:

  • Version 6.4.01 (international release with multilingual user interface)
  • Version 6.4.02 (Service Pack for the previous version)
  • Version 6.5.00 (integration of the evaluation of Google AdWords and Yahoo Search Marketing )
  • Version 6.5.01 (international release with multilingual user interface)
  • Version 6.6.00 (extensive extension of the reports with regard to search engine marketing)
  • Version 6.6.01 (Service Pack for the previous version)
  • Version 6.6.02 (international release with multilingual user interface and implementation of a lightweight geo database)
  • Version 6.6.03 (international release without log source limitation and with connection to Google AdWords API v200909)
  • Version 7,000 (64-bit support, new user interface, event tracking)

The new features in Urchin 7: 64-bit support, redesigned user interface, Google AdWords Tag Manager, 1,000 profiles with no log source limit, event tracking, parallel profile processing, extended segmentation, user-defined DNS entries, customizable geo-database, permalinks, New grouping of reports, new data API 2.0, user-defined filter order, extended search tables, new report “Site-Summary”.

In January 2012, Google announced that it would discontinue the “Urchin Software” client software and instead rely solely on the server version.

technical features

Urchin Software could be used on the Windows and Linux operating systems . From version 6 the installation of a database ( MySQL or PostgreSQL ) to save the configuration was absolutely necessary.

Different log source formats could be evaluated, such as B. Apache and Microsoft IIS , but also Google AdWords and Yahoo Search Marketing. It was also possible to create your own log file formats. With custom reports , new reports could be created according to your own requirements.
