Urgrund is an Australian black and thrash metal band from Brisbane , which was founded in 1998.
history
The band was formed in December 1998 by guitarist and singer Robin "Bolthorn" "Rob Scavenger" Fassbender as a continuation of his previous group Baalberith. After the arrival of drummer Sean "Gryphon" Cummiskey, they recorded a first demo which was titled In Apocalyptic Ruins - The Rebirth . In 2000 the EP Warlore was released via Bleed Records with a circulation of 200 copies. The following year, a second EP called Drenched in Blood followed on Spikekult Records , whereupon Necrovore played the bass on some songs. Chris "Criss Volcano" is on Broadway as the drummer. Then Fiendsickness was added as the second guitarist, while Cummiskey was replaced by Thoth Amon. From the beginning of 2002, however, the original trio had come together again. In the same year, the debut album The Graven Sign was released via Baphomet Records . In 2003 Fassbender moved the group's headquarters to Melbourne . The cast then consisted of the drummer Broadway, guitarist Paul "Maismyr" Marsh and bassist LH Vagrant. The latter was later replaced by the returning to the band Necrovore, while Marsh was exchanged for Mike Possessed. In 2004 the Irish label Invictus Productions released the EP Battle Skin . The sound carrier was limited to 100 pieces and consists of two new songs and a cover version of Sodoms Ausgebombt . In 2005 the second album Unchangeable Fate was published. In 2007 the album Discples of Supremacy was released . In early 2009, an EP called Heirs to the Godless Dawn was recorded with Broadway on drums. After gigs in the USA in 2010 , Fassbender relocated to Germany . In 2012, a self-titled album followed via Deathrune Records .
style
Brian Giffin wrote in his Encyclopedia of Australian Heavy Metal that the band plays a mix of Thrash and Black Metal. Sic from myrrthronth.de also assigned the band to these two genres in his review of The Graven Sign . However, the album offers nothing new, mixes Black and Thrash Metal riffs as well as “short, dragging breaks , elsewhere a confused Frickelsolo , standard rumble drumming and sincerely harmless croaking ”. Lars Christiansen from metalcrypt.com also reviewed the album and also attributed it to both genres. The compositions are mostly in the medium speed range, with occasional faster passages. Several tonal parallels to Deströyer 666 can be found in the songs .
