Uromyces fragilipes is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the lily family and of various sweet grasses . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It iswidespread in the Holarctic .

features

Macroscopic features

Uromyces fragilipes can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Uromyces fragilipes grows as with all Uromyces TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. The aecia of the species and their spores have not yet been described. The yellow uredia of the fungus usually grow on the upper side of the host leaves. Their light golden to colorless uredospores are 24–32 × 22–28 µm in size, ovate to broadly ellipsoidal and spiky. The bilateral growing parts of the species are chocolate brown, powdery and loosely covered or exposed. The brown teliospores are unicellular, mostly angular ovoid to ellipsoid and 24–30 × 20–25 µm in size. Their stem is colorless to brownish and up to 50 µm long.

distribution

The known distribution area of Uromyces fragilipes includes the temperate Holarctic from France to the western USA .

ecology

The host plants of Uromyces fragilipes are for the Haplonts lily family (Liliaceae spp.) As well as various Agropyron , Deschampsia , Hordeum and Vulpia species and rye ( Secale cereale ) for the Dikaryont . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species goes through a development cycle with spermogonia, Aecien, Telien and Uredien and completes a host change .
