The American round stingrays (Urotrygonidae) are a family of rays (Batoidea). They live on the continental shelf on both sides of the American double continent in tropical and subtropical regions of the western Atlantic and the eastern Pacific .

features

The body disc always has a width of less than 1.3 times the body length. The tail is slender and as long as the body. It has one or more venomous stings and ends in a caudal fin. Dorsal fins are missing. The small American round stingrays are 12 to 76 centimeters long.

Systematics

There are two genera with 20 species. Both genera were formerly part of the round stingrays (Urolophidae):
