Ursula Huth (born September 29, 1952 in Ulm ) is a German sculptor and glass artist. Installations from pâte de verre , sculptures and glass pictures made of flashed glass can be found all over the world.

Life

Ursula Huth grew up with three siblings in Laupheim. At the age of 16 she self-taught the enamel technique. She initially concentrated on the motif work on transparent enamel as the image carrier . From 1972 to 1979 she studied art history at the University of Stuttgart and painting and glass design at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart .
As a student of Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen , she was introduced to glass and experienced the breakthrough of the traditional link between glass painting and architecture and the “free glass image”.
After graduation, the American studio glass movement reached Europe. Ursula Huth received a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD and continued her studies from 1980 to 1982 at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence (USA). Dale Chihuly has headed the “Glass Program” there for ten years. Ursula Huth learned how to handle hot glass and later taught at the Pilchuck Glass School.
Influenced by the American studio glass movement, Huth designs glass sculptures in a technical variety using painterly and graphic means. Already in the works of the late 1970s, the strict composition scheme of the glass pictures gives way to a free division of space with a more spontaneous implementation. a. by etching, engraving, sandblasting as well as black solder and enamel painting. At the same time there is an approach to representational motifs, which recur symbolically and are supplemented by further archaic signs and childlike-looking doodles. Ursula Huth mostly uses multiple overlaid glasses as material for the glass pictures, which she has manufactured in the Lamberts glassworks in Waldsassen. Her work as an artist was later inspired by numerous trips and work stays in India, Indonesia, Japan and Nepal. There she dealt with traditional work, tried and tested ancient techniques and allows this experience to flow into her current works. Ursula Huth has been married to the teacher and painter Christoph Klett since 1994. She lives and works in Tübingen in the former home of the sculptor Suse Müller-Diefenbach.
