Extraordinary Synod of Bishops in Rome 2014
Ute Eberl was one of the few women and the only German layperson to take part in the third extraordinary Synod of Bishops, which took place in Rome from October 5 to 19, 2014 in the presence of the Pope and the chairman of the over one hundred Bishops' Conferences and under the motto “The pastoral challenges of the family in the context of evangelization ”. On the part of the German Bishops' Conference , Reinhard Cardinal Marx took part in the synod.
During the extraordinary Synod of Bishops, which served in preparation for the 14th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops under the motto “The vocation and mission of the family in the church and world today” from October 14th to 24th, 2015, she had advisory tasks. During her lecture, she urged the audience to look into the family's living rooms rather than into the bedrooms. Christoph Cardinal Schönborn shared this view and said that the Pope also shares this view.
After the synod, Ute Eberl was impressed and encouraged by the Pope's closing remarks. He had asked the participants to have controversial debates and not to avoid an argument. She believes that the Synod showed that the Church “needs to step out of her comfort zone” and hear more about real family life around the world. The church must provide answers to the many questions asked during the synod and "do not first look through the glasses of canon law ".
Ute Eberl's participation was received internationally.
