Aweil ( Arabic أويل, Alternative spellings Uwail , Uwayl or Aweel ) is the capital of the southern Sudanese state of Aweil (until 2015 of the state of Northern Bahr el Ghazal ) and of the Aweil West County .

Aweil is located in the northwest of South Sudan between the rivers Lol in the north and Pongo in the south, on the railway line to Wau and just under 100 km from this nearest larger city.

Infrastructure

The railway line built in the 1960s, which ran north to al-Ubayyid and ended south in Wau, was interrupted in the South Sudanese civil war. In 2009 a train ran from Babanusa to Aweil for the first time , and in 2010 the section between Aweil and Wau was reopened. Road connections are bad.
