Uwe-Karsten Henry "Uwe" Häßler (born July 14, 1938 in Altenburg ) is a German painter , graphic artist and sculptor .

biography

After attending school in Altenburg and from 1951 in Bielefeld, he was trained as a painter from 1953 to 1956, accompanied by evening classes with Wilhelm Heiner at the Bielefeld Werkkunstschule . From 1956–1958 he studied painting and sculpture at the Werkkunstschule Münster under Walter Klöckner. Since 1958 Hässler has lived in Worpswede with only a few interruptions (1983 in Berlin, 1984 in Jesteburg, 1985–1997 in Bremen). 1961/1962 study trips took him to Italy, Corsica and southern France. He has been married to Hannelore Karin Masemann since 1962 and has a daughter: Corinna. Further study trips to Europe ( Greece 1970) and South America ( Guatemala 1974).

So far, Uwe Häßler has created an extraordinarily extensive and varied work which, in addition to the many paintings, includes thousands of drawings, many prints and sculptures. He is one of the artists who helped the old artists' colony in Worpswede to regain its reputation in the 1970s. Starting with surreal body landscapes, he did not shy away from abrupt thematic, color and formal changes in his painting style for many years. In retrospect, however, these attempts come together to form large groups of works in which he places colors and shapes in ever new relationships in still life or in the anonymized image of man that has determined work for many years. Uwe Häßler has always been actively involved in the artistic interests of the place, including for the Atelierhausverein Worpswede eV founded by Martin Kausche
