Whaling and Vegesack

The memories of the whaling tradition in the whaling town of Vegesack are nurtured by this whale tail fin (also called “fluke”), the whale jaw , and the whale sculpture in Gerhard-Rohlfs-Straße.

In the 17th century the port of Vegesack developed into a base for whaling in the Arctic . For this purpose, a Greenland company from Bremen was founded in 1653 . From 1830 the shipyard owner Johann Lange (1775–1844) built up his fleet of ships. In 1837 he applied for a license to operate a liquor factory and participated in whaling. In 1843 a public limited company was founded in Vegesack "... for the purpose of Greenland fishing ...". Whaling in the Arctic continued until 1872. The Petroleum as a new fuel made the Trangewinnung of whales unprofitable.
