From 1974 to 1982 he headed the boarding school in Dietrich Bonhoeffer Haus, a pioneering institution for physically handicapped young people from secondary schools in Cologne. From 1982 to 1988 he worked again as a teacher at these schools. In 1988 Oelsner became the rector of the school at the Cologne University Hospital . Under his leadership until 2011, in close cooperation with the clinic, it became a regional center for education in illness with a focus on chronic diseases and child and adolescent psychiatry. Since 1985 Wolfgang Oelsner has also had a practice as an analytical child and adolescent psychotherapist . The focus of his educational and psychotherapeutic work is school refusal , autism spectrum disorders , adoption and foster care relationships, and anxiety disorders .

In the double function as a pedagogue and youth psychotherapist, Oelsner has been active as a speaker and consultant (including WDR television "Servicezeit Familie") since the 1980s. Since 2009 he has been designing and moderating the "parent workshop" in the "studio dumont" of the DuMont media group in Cologne on a voluntary basis.

As a part-time trained trumpeter, Oelsner designed structural changes to brass instruments ( instrument prosthetics ) as part of a teaching assignment from the Rheinische Musikschule Cologne (1971 to 1976) for use by people with physical disabilities and founded music ensembles in special schools.

Carnival cultural explorer

As a part-time job, Oelsner also researches psychological and cultural-anthropological aspects of carnival and is considered a "carnival philosopher". Knowledge of and interest in regional customs made him a co-designer and researcher of the Rhenish Carnival . He is the recipient of the “ German Carnival Culture Prize ” (2008) from the Bund Deutscher Karneval and the “ Willy Millowitsch Medal ” (2010) from the Cologne Carnival Festival Committee .
