content

In the small town of Kurouzu, supernatural phenomena related to spirals occur again and again. These are initially only noticed by Shuichi Saito, whose father is often part of the phenomena. Shuichi's friend Kirie Goshima doesn't notice anything unusual at first and is concerned about Shuichi's health. But the events are becoming more frequent and more drastic. Over time, the inhabitants of the place become obsessed with spirals or paranoid, gruesome deaths occur, and soon people transform into other, spiral beings.

publication

The manga series appeared in individual chapters in the magazine Weekly Big Comic Spirits from 1998 to 1999. The publishing house Shogakukan brought out the series in three anthologies.

With Viz Comics an English translation appeared after the series already in the magazine Pulp had appeared. A Spanish edition was published by Planeta DeAgostini Comics, a French edition by Tonkam and a Portuguese edition by Conrad in Brazil. Carlsen Comics will publish the series from October 2013 to March 2014 in a German version.

reception

The English edition was nominated for the Eisner Award in the category Best US Edition of International Material in 2002 and 2003 . According to Animerica magazine , Junji Ito has succeeded in making something terrifying out of such an everyday and natural pattern as spirals. In this way he creates an unusual, timeless horror story that is fun to read and that lets you empathize with the main characters in the romantic scenes that occur. Deep-seated fears, obsession and desire are the themes of the series. The supernatural or supernatural changes in characters and surroundings are reminiscent of the works of HP Lovecraft , and like Edgar Allan Poe , Ito takes on love and the desire for attention as themes of horror. The German manga scene also praises the fact that the threat to this story is not a phantom or villain, but faceless and disembodied, which has already proven to be a successful concept in the best horror stories. Visually, Ito relies on a classic paneling , inspired by earlier horror artists such as Kazuo Umezu : “The right angles of the picture borders, dominant on each side, really bring out the all-engulfing round vortices. Every shock moment [...] fits perfectly. "
