Václav Dobiáš (resistance fighter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Václav Dobiáš (born September 19, 1920 in Jimramov , † April 10, 1945 in Zwickau ) was a Czech resistance fighter and one of the three co-founders and leaders of the Předvoj resistance group . He was executed in Zwickau by the National Socialists.

Life

After graduating from secondary school, Dobiáš attended the Czech Technical University in Prague , but after all universities were closed during the Protectorate period , he had to interrupt his studies.

The Evangelical behaved Dobiáš took 1943/1944 in meetings of a group of young leftist students in part that in the context of the Protestant youth of the Parish of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren in Prague district Smíchov met. Together with his friends Karel Hiršl and Jiří Staněk , he formed the core of the future group, which first published the illegal magazine Předvoj , and with them later founded the resistance group of the same name Předvoj . Dobiáš, himself evangelical, made acquaintance with Marxist literature and socialist ideas of various stripes, but not with the history of the Soviet Union under Stalin and not with the politics of the communist parties. Just like his fellow campaigners, he saw himself as a communist and was determined to resist the National Socialist occupation of his country. The defeat of the German army at Stalingrad provided him with a major motivation for founding and expanding the resistance group .

As one of the leaders, Dobiáš made a significant contribution to the expansion of the group and its spread throughout the protectorate and developed an intelligence network. There are contradicting statements about the size of the Předvoj resistance group: while today's Communist Youth Association (youth organization of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia ) gives the number 2000, the sociologist Wagnerová speaks about the largest resistance organization of that time in Bohemia and Moravia with up to ten A thousand members. The resistance group also took part in acts of sabotage, and those responsible for the attack on August Gölzer emerged from their circle .

Shortly before the end of the war, Václav Dobiáš was arrested, deported to Zwickau and executed there on April 10, 1945; After their arrest, other members of the resistance group were in the Small Fortress Theresienstadt , where they were also executed on May 2, 1945 with a group of almost 70 prisoners.
